The Cornell Department of Education's varied extension and outreach activity reflects the department's diverse array of disciplines and programs, representing a broad interpretation of the terms of public university engagement as defined by the Kellogg Commission on the Future of State and Land-Grant Universities.
Those involved in educational outreach work closely with Cornell Cooperative Extension on significant projects such as the Cornell Educational Resources Program (CERP), Pathways to a Better Trained Workforce, and Strengthening Extension's Public Issues Education Work. But within the spirit of university engagement, the department has also developed other avenues of outreach to serve the public of New York State such as the Community Learning and Service Partnership Program, the Institute for Community College Development, and the Rural Schools Association.
There are conscious efforts to link departmental research and extension activities to their mutual advantage. Examples of this interconnection include the department's Rural Schools Association (RSA) and its professional development for teachers and administrators. RSA benefits from policy research related to K-12 education, organizational behavior, administrative leadership, and high-stakes accountability issues. Professional development programs are informed by Cornell research on cultivating and sustaining critically reflective practitioners; developing and communicating effective teaching and learning in middle and secondary agricultural, mathematics, and science; promoting ethical communities of learners and moral education for K-12 students; and the self-study of teacher education practices.
